Successful Transitions

Young people not participating in education or employment can find themselves in a precarious situation with an increased likelihood of financial distress, health/mental health issues and contact with the justice system.

The Successful Transitions program supports young people aged 17-24 to take the leap into work experience, volunteering, further education / training or secure employment.

Launched in April 2015, Successful Transitions intensively mentors young people who are disengaged from education or training. The program targets the most disengaged young people in our communities.

Successful Transitions is delivered across selected metropolitan and regional locations by specialist providers with proven experience of working with young people. The program is currently delivered in partnership between the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion and the Department of State Development to further improve outcomes for participants.

Below are some case studies of Successful Transitions participants.

Emma, 20

Emma lives at home with her father just outside metropolitan Adelaide. Although she completed Year 12, she experiences severe anxiety which has made it difficult for her to take up opportunities after school. Since joining the Successful Transitions program, Emma has graduated from needing to work one on one, to working in groups with other participants. Emma feels she is not defined by anxiety, is now sitting for her Learner's permit and is feeling more confident to apply for jobs.

David, 17

David left mainstream school in Year 10 and engaged in non-mainstream schooling options. But in his new learning environment he still struggled to be motivated, got in trouble for poor behaviour and was asked not to return. David felt he was being treated like a child instead of a young adult. Since joining the program, David has received the tailored support he needs. He is practicing his driving knowledge and looks forward to taking the Learner's Permit test soon. He has also become financially stable by finding a job that suits him. He works hard and feels respected in his workplace.
