Community of Schools and Youth Services

Between 2016 - 2018, the Office for Youth is funding the University of South Australia (UniSA) to pilot an innovative program in Mount Gambier with a focus on preventing at-risk young people from becoming homeless. The model is based on an initiative first trialed in Geelong by program developer and homelessness researcher, Associate Professor David Mackenzie.

The two-year pilot will operate across the two public secondary schools in Mount Gambier. UniSA will partner with Service to Youth Council and Uniting Communities to implement a population-based survey to help identify students at risk of homelessness. These students will then be streamed into youth focused, family centred support aimed at preserving familial/caregiver relationships, maintaining engagement with school and preventing entry into the homelessness system.
